Hair dye and bleach damage hair. They do not, in any ordinary use, kill follicles. Those two sentences look contradictory to anyone who has bleached their hair and then watched it come out in handfuls, which is why the question keeps getting answered badly. What is coming out in that scenario is usually hair that snapped partway along the shaft, not hair that was released by the follicle. The distinction decides whether you have a cosmetic problem that grows out or a hair loss problem that does not.

What bleach does, structurally
A hair shaft is a protein rod with three layers. The cuticle is the overlapping outer scale layer that protects everything underneath. The cortex is the bulk of the fibre and holds the pigment and the disulphide bonds that give hair its strength. The medulla is the core and is not always present.
Bleaching requires an alkaline agent to swell and lift the cuticle so peroxide can reach the cortex and oxidise melanin. That process is not selective. It also oxidises the keratin proteins and strips the surface lipid layer, and it breaks a proportion of the disulphide bonds that hold the fibre together. The result is a shaft with less tensile strength, a rougher surface, and greater porosity, which is why bleached hair absorbs water faster, dries out and snaps under mechanical stress it would previously have survived.
Permanent dye uses the same lifting mechanism at lower intensity. Semi-permanent and temporary colour deposits on or just under the cuticle without the peroxide step, which is why it is much gentler and also why it washes out.
Breakage and shedding are distinguishable by eye

When dye genuinely causes hair loss
There are real mechanisms here and they are worth taking seriously, because they are the cases where waiting it out is the wrong response.
- Allergic contact dermatitis. Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a common sensitiser in permanent dyes and one of the more frequent causes of positive patch tests in dermatology. A reaction produces itching, redness, swelling and sometimes weeping at the scalp and hairline, and the inflammation can push follicles into telogen. Sensitisation is cumulative, so a reaction can appear after years of using the same product without incident.
- Chemical burn. Bleach left on too long, applied at too high a volume, or applied to a scalp that is already broken or freshly scratched can cause a true burn. Severe burns can scar, and a scarred follicle does not regrow.
- Telogen effluvium after a severe reaction. Any significant inflammatory insult to the scalp can trigger a diffuse shed two to three months later. The delay is why people rarely connect it to the appointment that caused it.
- Traction on weakened hair. Chemically processed hair combined with tight braids, weaves or extensions is the classic setup for traction alopecia, which becomes permanent if sustained long enough to scar.

Does dye reach the follicle?

That is a separate question from hair loss and the evidence is genuinely mixed rather than settled. It concerns long-term systemic risk and occupational exposure in hairdressers, not follicle survival, and it is not a reason to reinterpret shedding after a colour appointment.
