Most people who panic about hair loss in September are looking at a real increase in shedding. They are also usually looking at something that reverses on its own by December. Human hair has a measurable seasonal rhythm, with a shedding peak in late summer and early autumn that shows up in healthy scalps with no androgenetic alopecia at all. The problem is that the peak arrives looking exactly like the early stage of pattern hair loss, and the two demand opposite responses: one needs patience, the other needs a plan.

Every follicle cycles independently through growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and rest (telogen). A hair sheds at the end of telogen, roughly two to three months after the follicle stopped growing it. So the shedding you see in a given week reflects follicles that entered rest a season earlier, not anything that happened to you recently.
Randall and Ebling tracked this in men over an extended period and found the proportion of scalp follicles in telogen peaked around late summer. Because of the two-to-three month lag between entering telogen and the hair actually releasing, the visible shed lands in autumn. Kunz and colleagues later observed the same seasonal maximum in women who had come to a clinic complaining of hair loss, which matters: these were people worried enough to seek help, and a portion of what they were seeing was a normal annual rhythm.
The proposed explanation is photoperiod, the seasonal change in day length, which regulates coat cycling in most mammals. Humans kept a weakened version of the same signal. This is why the effect is consistent in direction but modest in size, and why it does not track temperature or humidity the way people assume. Why it gets mistaken for balding
Shedding is the most available evidence and the least informative. Hair in the drain is easy to notice, easy to photograph and emotionally loud. Coverage, which is what actually determines whether you look like you are losing hair, changes far too slowly to perceive day to day.
This produces a predictable error. Someone notices heavier shedding in September, concludes they are balding, and starts treatment. By December the seasonal shed has resolved on its own and the treatment gets credit for a recovery it did not cause. The reverse error is just as common: a genuine pattern loss gets dismissed as seasonal, and nothing happens for a year.

- Duration. A seasonal shed builds, peaks and settles inside roughly three months. Shedding that is still elevated after four or five months is doing something else.
- Coverage. Seasonal shedding does not reduce scalp coverage, because the follicles are resting rather than shrinking. If your part is visibly wider than it was last spring, that is not seasonality.
- Hair calibre. Pattern loss miniaturises hair, so the regrowth comes back finer and shorter each cycle. Seasonal shedding regrows at the same thickness it had before.
What to track, and when
The measurement problem is that the thing you want to compare is a year apart. That is only possible if the images are consistent enough to compare, which is a discipline problem rather than a biology one.
- Photograph the same three zones (hairline straight on, both temples at 45 degrees, crown from above) in the same lighting, at the same time of day.
- Capture at least monthly. Weekly is better, because it makes the seasonal curve visible rather than a pair of distant snapshots.

When the timing of a treatment decision matters
